Where in the past Bloc Party have dealt in emotional ambiguity, on this seventh effort all metaphors are discarded.
Described by Kele Okereke as the most personal work of his career, Anatomy of a Brief Romance is a chronological account of a relationship from first glance to final goodbye, operating as a memoir over 14 songs.
Given the autobiographical content, it’s a surprise that Okereke chose to release this under the Bloc Party name rather than as a solo record.
Yet the presence of guitarist Russell Lissack, drummer Louise Bartle and new bassist Harry Deacon — making his recording debut with the band — proves crucial.
Although the album leans more heavily on synthesisers than before, the band add a heft and texture that the subject matter demands.

It opens with the elegant ‘22.01.22’, a tender recollection of the day Okereke first met his future infatuation.
Built around shimmering electronics and a restrained beat, it’s a far cry from the explosive openers of days gone by.
The early stages of romance are rendered in vivid detail across the opening five tracks, with Lissack making a grand entrance on the euphoric-yet-sinister ‘Coming On Strong’.
The opening act culminates in the yearning splendour of ‘Lagoon Blue’, a top tier ballad originally recorded back in 2023 and the catalyst for the album.

Thereafter, the mood shifts as the infatuation fades.
‘Muscleworks’ masks the emotional unease beneath gleaming hooks and a poptastic key change, while Lissack’s trademark abrasive guitar work reflects the fractures opening.
By the time we get to ‘Worst Birthday Ever’, it appears the relationship is beyond repair.

The vitriolic ‘Not Your Problem’ bristles with resentment, while ‘Now We Can’t Be Friends’ pairs one of the record’s strongest choruses with icy synth arpeggios
that successfully evoke the painful distance between former lovers.
Best of all is ‘Rotherhithe’, an achingly sad track whose theatrical sweep owes much to Okereke’s work in musical theatre.
Indeed, the whole album could be a spiritual sequel to the ‘Leave To Remain’ project from 2019.

Unfortunately, some lyrics verge on clichéd, and the final act indulges the self-absorption that heartbreak brings.
Yet that’s the album’s most distinctive element, as the author never attempts to disguise his vulnerability as he once did.
Instead, Bloc Party embrace the messiness of love and loss on what is undeniably a concept album that is uneven in places but, in that way, reflects the subject it’s covering.

It may not be among their finest work, but ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’ is surely a cathartic release for its composer and for listeners who see their own experiences reflected in it.
